Pink Himalayan salt is a natural rock salt mined near the foothills of the Himalayas. Its rosy colour and clean, mineral flavour have made it a popular choice in kitchens around the world.
What is it?
Chemically, Himalayan pink salt is very similar to ordinary table salt - it is mostly sodium chloride. The remainder is made up of trace minerals such as potassium, magnesium and calcium, which give the salt its distinctive pink tint and subtly different taste.
How to use it
Use it just as you would any quality salt: for seasoning while cooking, finishing dishes at the table, or in baking. Because the crystals are often larger than fine table salt, coarse pink salt is especially good in a salt grinder or sprinkled as a finishing salt.
A note on salt and balance
Like all salt, Himalayan pink salt is best enjoyed in moderation as part of a balanced diet. The trace minerals it contains are present in very small amounts, so it is best appreciated simply for its flavour and appearance.
